DANCE CAVISE NEWS

Joe & Lori CaviseFrom The Director

We hope you had a wonderful holiday season. As 2006 begins, we look forward to new and exciting programs at Dance Cavise. We now have our largest and most comprehensive teaching staff ever, and have expanded our Ballet and Hip Hop programs. Dance can teach children about gaining self confidence, improving social etiquette and using different ways of expressing themselves. This is exemplified in the next article about our "MAS" Hot Ballroom workshop in White Plains, On the heels of its success, we have added a children's Ballroom Workshop and BOYS Hip Hop to the schedule. Now, in our 17th year, it is more fulfilling than ever to watch how dance can change a child's life. Happy dancing in 2006'!

JOE and LORI

Cavise Goes "MAS Hot" Ballroom!!

After being inspired by the documentary "Mad Hot Ballroom", Mamaroneck Avenue School in White Plains commissioned Dance Cavise to embark on an ambitious and exciting performing arts residency. Director, Joe Cavise, along with National Ballroom champion Edgar Osario spent six weeks getting "Mad Hot" teaching the fourth grade student body the Salsa, Rumba, Merengue, Tango and Swing. The residency culminated in a performance in front of a standing-room only crowd, where the kids followed with heart-felt testimonials about what was taught through the experience that went well beyond dance. Praise from Vice—Principal Greg Middleton who said, "The children were amazing. The program far exceeded our expectations!"

The dancers have been busy rehearsing for their upcoming spring season, but their first order of business was hosting a Dance-a-thon for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Once again the generosity was overwhelming from local talent, including the DJ Eric Kisis of Elite Entertainment. Food for the 100 dancers was donated by Sal's Pizzeria, ReAldo's Pizza, Pizza Gourmet, and Pizza 2000. Desserts were donated by Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream and"Divvies" of South Salem. The event raised over $7000 For Habitat Humanity.

Kid Korner

This issue's Kid's Korner is written by
Carly Stracher, age 10
(Carly is a fourth grade student at Mamaroneck Avenue School In White Plains, New York)

I have been dancing at Dance Cavise for four years and this year I take Ballet and Jazz. Imagine my surprise when, at my elementary school in White Plains, I found out we were going to do a dance program called (MAS Hot Ballroom), and that my dance teacher, Joe was going to be teaching it. I was so excited! For six weeks, all of the fourth graders at Mamaroneck Avenue School learned the Rhumba, Tango, Cha-Cha, Swing and Merengue. Each class had their own dance to learn, but some kids had to learn two. At first, practically nobody wanted to do it because we didn't want to dance with each other. Everybody was saying,<{ I don't want to do this because we had to hold hands with the boys." Learning the basic steps was also kind of tricky, but it turned out to be one of the most amazing things any of us has ever done. Why? Because it was so much fun! We danced our hearts away, and didn't mind holding hands because we had to get ready for a show! We performed in front of the entire school and our parents. Mr. 'C' and Mr. '0' were amazing! I hope that other people will have the same great chance to do this like I did.
