DANCE CAVISE NEWS

The Directors

Celebrate National Dance

Dear Friends, Spring is here, and that means tulips, daffodils, and dance shows! Even though Dance Cavise is not a performance oriented program, all of the children will be involved in some type of show this Spring. Good Luck!

It doesn't matter if you leap, tap or twirl to the beat…it's all about dancing. At Dance Cavise we're celebrating National Dance Week, April 29th through May 5th:

* Adults: Free Classes All Week Long…
* Balloon Pop for the kids…$1.00 a pop
* Poster Contest
* Prizes for all dance students

Our professional dancers with the Off Center Dance Theatre are also in concert on April 13th and 14th at the Dance Lab Theatre in the Dance Building at Purchase College. This year I welcome Val Suarez as our new Associate Director. With Val's help, we hope to re-establish our relationship with New York City, and beyond. We have scheduled a performance at the Riverside Church on May 11th. Please look for an upcoming letter regarding this new venture. Happy spring.

For Your Health . .

This is the first in a series of articles on dancers' health. This week, Dr. Bob Piccora, a board certified foot and ankle surgeon, tells us about some common problems with dancers' feet.

There are many factors that can cause foot and ankle problems in young dancers. Depending on the type of dance, problems such as bunions, bone spurs, tendonitis, shin splints and ingrown toenails can occur from poor foot care. These conditions could be a result of improper shoes, poor hygiene, incorrect dance technique or stretching, or a pre-existing hereditary problem.

The best way to keep these problems to a minimum is to try the following:
1) Always buy shoes in the evening when your feet are at their maximum size.
2) Wash your feet daily, fungus love feet!
3) Cut toenails straight across with no rounded edges.
4) Have your feet checked for imbalances with a computerized "gait" analysis.
5) Most importantly, be sure your body is properly warmed-up before doing any fancy foot work. Consult your teacher if any dance moves cause pain in your feet.
6) Lastly, the best advice is to consult a physician if any pain persists.

With my daughter, Christine, as a member of the Dance Cavise family, parents can call me anytime for free advice at (914) 420-7828. Just mention Dance Cavise and I'll take care of you.

The Broken Foot
By Emily Turco
12 year old Ballet and Jazz dancer at Dance Cavise
You never realize what is important to you until it's no longer there. When I broke my foot I was devastated. I didn't know the effect it would have on the next eight weeks of my life! During this time it was hard for me NOT to want to dance. I decided to take time to work on things that needed improvement without being on my foot. I tried to attend class just to learn as much as possible by watching. I know that stretch and strength are major parts of dance. I couldn't work on the strength part, but stretching was something I could do. Now I was able to spend some time to work on my flexibility. I made myself determined that by the time I was back dancing I would be more stretched and ready to go. I committed myself to attend class so I wouldn't fall behind. Yet during the times at which I could not do much I would take every second to work on my stretch. With the thought of being able to accomplish something even while being "out of commission", I had the right frame of mind. So when I finally got back to dancing two months later, I even surprised myself with how much I had accomplished in eight weeks of stretching. But please… I would still advise not breaking your foot!
