DANCE CAVISE NEWS

Dear Friends,

We hope you are continuing to have a great summer. Our's has been action packed with the studio renovations going strong and our Camp Cavise being bigger and better than ever. Read on about all the fun we had during this exciting performing arts program, including our first camp performance in a "real" theatre.

Now on to our exciting fall season… we will have full use of our beautifully renovated studio and will also be welcoming new teachers to our staff. Kim Gaita, formerly Kim Coralian, is returning to Dance Cavise full tume after a two year hiatus. She will be teaching Tap and Jazz and we are thrilled to have her back. Also, joining us this fall is Todd Hall. Mr. Hall is a former dancer with the Boston Ballet and will be teaching on Saturdays followed by an advanced Pas de Deux class for partnering. We welcome Stephanie Knox, who will be working with our "little ones" this year in Ballet and Creative movement.

After the kids get settled back in school, why not join us for a morning adult dance class. We offer Ballet and Jazz and have babysitting available for your convenience.

Enjoy the last few lazy days of summer and get ready for a great year of dance.

JOE & LORI

Camp Cavise 2004!!!

This year's Camp Cavise experience seemed to be more exciting than usual even with renovations all around us. When a temporary wall was erected to keep the children in a safe environment, our campers painted their self-portraits on it using every color of the rainbow. As we danced all summer, we admired the beauty of the wall, though sadly realizing that when the construction was complete, it would have to come down. In addition to learning the fundamentals of Musical Theatre, campers created weekly themed fashion shows including "Crazy Hair", "Sportswear", "Hoe-Down Day", and our very first Hawaiian Luau. We also dined at Ellen's Stardust in New York City and saw two exciting Broadway shows-"Hairspray" and "Wicked". The campers really enjoyed meeting the stars after the show! We took our original performance of "Switched, the Musical", to a real theatre this year which was a first for Camp Cavise. It was a summer that we just never wanted to end….but there's always next year!

Everything Old is New Again!

If you've driven down Halstead Avenue this summer, you have seen the huge changes being made to our beloved space. After installing a new roof and front façade, we have added a new 1200 SF dance studio, with panoramic views and cathedral ceilings. We also added a larger costume room to house our expanding collection of classical tutus and various costumes and accessories. Mercando Industries in Yonkers, did a wonderful job of completely securing the workplace during the construction, making it safe for us to continue our Children's Summer Program. By the time our Fall program begins, we will have a walkway directly from our parking lot to the front door, making it safer for our students to stay off the driveways and streets. Of course, dropping off your child in front of our building is always a preferred option. Come by and visit, we would be happy to give you a tour.

KID'S KORNER

This issues Kid's Korner features a view from our Camp Counselor Rebecca Conners

"What It's Like To Be A New Counselor"
It is never easy being the new student in school or the new kid at camp. It is sometimes even more difficult when you're a new counselor. I remember waking up on the first day of Camp Cavise with butterflies in my stomach, nervous and anxious for what the day would bring. I was concerned that I would not know where to find things or how things would work, especially since I had never danced at the studio. At all the preparation meetings, things were coming at me so fast. I just nodded my head and smiled, but on the inside I was so confused. By the time the first day of camp came and went, I felt very different. All of the campers, counselors, and staff were so sweet and welcoming. As the weeks continued, I fell in love with the party days, counselor dances, camp songs, contests, secret word and the many other Camp Cavise traditions. I got to know the other counselors and felt like I had always been a part of the Camp Cavise family. Seven weeks later, I know exactly where everything is and how everything at camp works. I know and love all the kids, and I am truly comfortable in the envirnment at Camp Cavise. I have also made great new friends and learned from the wonderful teaching staff. I thank Joe, Lori, the teachers, the counselors, and of course the campers for making my summer fun and memorable. Being the new counselor was not so bad after all!!!

Best Fit Forward

Can't wait to get on your toes? Before you get those pointe shoes, make sure the person fitting your shoes guides you toward a pair that looks and feels good. All of the following tips are from the August/September issue of Pointe Magazine.

  1. Pointe shoes must be flexible enough to assist a seamless transition from flat, through demi-pointe and up to pointe.

  2. Make sure to call before going in for a fitting because they take time and patience.

  3. When trying on a new pair of pointe shoes, begin by standing in first position.

  4. The "box" of the shoe should fit snugly but not squeeze the toes and metatarsal area. The toes should touch the front, sides, top and bottom of the box. If you can separate your toes, the box is too wide, however, the toes should not curl under or overlap. The heels should stay on without digging in.
